Change of Profile Beauty Index before and after Orthodontic Treatment

Abstract
enhancement of masticatory ability by the correction of dental and skeletal disharmonies has been the major concern of orthodontists. But, esthetic aspect is a factor of prime importance in the motivation of patients coming for orthodontic
treatment.
So, an analytical method to make an esthetic prognosis is necessary because the assumption that soft tissue will automatically adapt to the dentoskeletal relatios corrected by orthodontic treatment has not been confirmed in practice. We conducted
this
study to evaluate prognostic value of PBI(Profile Beauty index). From the cepalometric radiographs of 38 patients undergone orthodontic treatment, the PBIs before and after orthodontic treatment were calculated and analyzed concerned with the
types
of
malocclusion classified using APDI(Ateroposterior Dysplasia Indicator).
The PBI increment after orthodontic treatment was 12.0¡¾8.8 in class I Patients and 2.4¡¾3.3, 3.5¡¾4.9 in class II, class III patients respectively, hence the amount of positive PBI change was significant higher in class I patients than class Ii
or
class III patients(P<0.01).
If we incorporate the pretreatment and objective PBI in the diagnosis and treatment planning of malocclusion patients, we will improve the doctor-patient relationship by giving high predictability as to the results of orthodontic treatment.
